Scale & Observation

In 2013, we visited Egypt, first touring Cairo before cruising down the Nile River to Aswan, making stops and excursions to observe ancient sites. Today’s Photo 101 theme is to “play with scale … use anything and everything to help convey size in your image.”  Three images from that trip are shown in this post, each using humans to suggest the enormity of objects from that earlier time.

Unfinished obelisk, Aswan, Egypt

This photo shows (what is believed to be) the largest obelisk ever discovered, located in a stone quarry in Aswan, Egypt. Hatshepsut, one of the most successful Egyptian pharaohs, ordered this obelisk to be made. Fractures appeared in the obelisk as it was being carved from a single rock, and so it was abandoned. Had it been completed, it would have stood 42 meters tall.

Play with Light

Although we planned to complete this exercise today in our back yard, the weather has not cooperated, progressing from merely overcast to active rain. Instead, archived pictures are used.

These pictures were taken of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, in October 2015, on several different days. Three different cameras were used, experimenting with f-stop settings and exposure time. The times of day include morning (one picture), afternoon (one picture), and evening (four pictures). Mystery & Lighting Effects

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Ganges Aarti, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

While appearing mysterious to Westerners, this man is part of the Ganges Aarti, a religious ceremony with 12 Hindu priests (pandits) simultaneously performing the same set of rituals. In Varanasi, the ritual occurs at sunset on the holy Dasaswamedh Ghat (steps), near Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This choreographed nightly lighting of lamps, accompanied by chanting, is an offering to the Goddess Ganga of the Ganges River, the most holy river in India.  While a popular viewpoint is the rooftop of a shop behind but higher than the ceremony, another option is to hire a local boat for an even better view from the river.
