A Charming Pair

This is our second entry in Lost in Translation’s Thursday’s Special: Pair.

This pair of cobras in a pair of baskets is responding to the movement of a pungi (musical instrument) as a snake charmer plays it in front of them. This little traveling show was set up on a raised sidewalk near Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Ritual Bathing at Kataragama Temple

Ritual purification in religion can involve bathing in a river to maintain purity prior to an important act.  The bathers seen in the Menik Ganga in the following photo are preparing to enter the Kataragama Temple near Tissamaharama, Sri Lanka, a sacred site for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Vedda people. Although the water didn’t seem clean to us, physical impurities don’t diminish the ritual purity such bathing brings to the believers.

Exotic: Kandyan Fire Eater

This is our entry in Dutch goes the Photo!’s Tuesday Photo Challenge — Exotic.

This fire eater was one of the Kandyan Dance performers at the Kandyan Cultural Centre in Kandy, Sri Lanka. According to the program, the Gini Sisila (Fire Dance) is a “south Ceylon fire dance showing the power of charms over fire and twenty seven devils that can trouble mankind. The absolute faith of the fire dancers protects them from the flames. This dance also includes fire-eating.”  We thought the whole performance was quite exotic.
