JJB 1891 — Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Back of Things

This is our entry in Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Back of Things.

This is the back of the window above the outside door to an apartment building in Lisbon, Portugal.  The numbers show that it was built in 1891. The glass in the window has been broken and cracked for a long time, and the plastic that has replaced the glass in the skylight that lights the charmingly curved three floor stairway is also falling away.

BUT: Our apartment on the third floor is beautifully renovated. The apartment building next door has been gutted and is being renovated. This area is being “gentrified” with many such remodeling projects. When you step outside this door, you may see Trolley 12E laboring uphill, full of happy tourists (and later in the day, residents returning home by trolley). Turning left, and walking uphill a short way before turning downhill again, you will soon find  Castelo de São Jorge and below that, the Alfama, where the popular folk music Fado was born.

Who or what is JJB? We don’t know.
